The 60th Anniversary of the Publicity Club of Chicago was marked with a dramatic new approach to the Golden Trumpet Awards presentation: a gala evening ceremony and dinner, a departure from the traditional luncheon ceremony.

Emceed by WLS-AM's afternoon host Roe Conn and newsman Jim Johnson, before more than 400 Midwest public relations professionals, the change obviously struck a favorable note, as evidenced by the enthusiasm greeting the awards presentation.

Winning the prestigious "Best of Show" Platinum Trumpet was The Museum of Science and Industry for its widely popular Titanic exhibit.

There was a tie for the Eleanor Meserow Creativity award between Kraft Foods, for the company's "Heavenly Bodies" campaign (in cooperation with Edelman Worldwide), and the Field Museum's Public Relations Department, for "Jurassic Coup," built around a publicity goldmine: a dinosaur named Sue.

Public relations coup is not going over the top when describing the Field Museum's unveiling of Sue, the largest Tyrannosaurus Rex ever discovered. Worldwide media coverage started weeks before the event - which delivered a rapt international press corps and opening day lines that rivaled a Star Wars movie premiere. Even the newspaper critics were wowed, describing the unveiling as "the best publicized museum exhibit in Chicago history."

Rotary International's media outreach for the grand opening of the Miracle League Field, a special baseball complex for children with disabilities, received the Edwin J. Shaughnessy Quality of Life Award. The opening event received national television coverage on CNN, MSNBC, FOX and ESPN, and local TV news coverage in 18 of the top 25 television markets in the US. In all, more than 50 different stories ran on TV stations nationwide. People Magazine also ran a feature story about the project. As a result of the coverage, six other cities have developed plans to build a similar complex.
