Thomas L. Harris
Thomas L. Harris was named one of the "100 Most
Influential Public Relations People of the 20th Century
by PR Week magazine. He was formerly president,
vice chairman and name partner of Golin/Harris
International.
Today, he is managing partner of Thomas L. Harris &
Company, a public relations consultancy that serves
corporations and public relations firms. Among them are
Allstate Insurance, Gillette, Procter & Gamble, Clorox,
State Farm Insurance, Pillsbury, Lands’ End, Miller
Brewing Company, Associates First Capital, United
Stationers, Diamond Cluster Group, Tetra Tech EM Inc.
and CDW Computer Centers.
Previously
Tom was president of Foote, Cone & Belding Public
Relations, which he founded in 1973, and was executive
vice president of Edelman Public Relations (1957-67) and
vice president public relations for both Needham, Harper
& Steers (now DDB Worldwide) and North Advertising.
His books include The Marketer’s Guide to Public
Relations (John Wiley & Sons, 1991), Choosing and
Working with Your Public Relations Firm (NTC
Business Books, 1992), and Value-Added Public
Relations (NTC Contemporary Books, 1998).
A frequent speaker to corporations, PR firms, trade
associations, professional societies, and academic
forum, he also publishes Thomas L. Harris ViewsLetter,
a newsletter of personal commentary on media, marketing
and public relations.
Tom was the winner of the 2000 Gold Anvil Award, the
highest individual national award presented by the
Public Relations Society of America. Tom is a member of
the Illinois State Executive Council of AARP, has served
as Communications Chair for the Illinois Division of the
American Cancer Society and the Jewish United Fund of
Metropolitan Chicago, and as a director of the Highland
Park, Ill. Hospital and the Anti-Defamation League.
