ANNUAL GOLDEN TRUMPET AWARDS
Top Awards
Each year, from the hundreds of entries received by
the Publicity Club of Chicago, special recognition is
given to a select few Golden Trumpet entries. Entries
that illustrate special creativity, address an issue to
improve the quality of life, or exhibit exceptional
overall public relations can be recommended by the
judges for this special recognition. These entries are
then evaluated by a group of top agency executives who
select "the best of the best."
Elynore Meserow Creativity Award
For exceptional creativity in public relations
programs. Established in 1986 in honor of the late
Elynore Dokart Meserow, former PCC president, for her
consistent support of creativity in entries during her
many years as chair of the Golden Trumpet Awards judging
committee.
And the winner is …
The Simpsons vs. The First Amendment
Burson-Marsteller, and the McCormick Tribune
Foundation/McCormick Tribune Freedom Museum
Burson-Marsteller’s poll comparing Americans’
knowledge of The Simpsons to the First Amendment earned
the McCormick Tribune Freedom Museum enormous media
attention on a non-profit’s budget.
THE EDWIN J. SHAUGHNESSY QUALITY OF LIFE
AWARD
For the foremost contribution of the year to
improving the quality of life in our society through
public relations. Established in 1977 in honor of Edwin
J. Shaughnessy, PCC officer and member.
And the winner is …
Exposing Police Torture in Chicago
Valerie Denney Communications
In the 1970s and 80s, Chicago Police Officers
systematically tortured African-American suspects on
Chicago’s South Side to elicit confessions, many of them
false. The officers were never brought to justice. In
July 2006, a special prosecutor report was finally
released giving credence to the heinous torture
allegations and bringing some closure for the men who
were tortured.
