Heartland Health Centers is a nonprofit federally qualified health center, led by a board of patients and community leaders whose mission is to provide access to high-quality healthcare for all on the North and Northwest sides of Chicago and beyond. with 18 locations we serve nearly 30,000 patients each year.

The Marketing Communications Director leads branding, marketing and communications strategy for Heartland Health Centers. S/he will direct organizational marketing and public relations campaigns and direct external marketing and communications efforts and ensure teams across the organization adhere to the organization’s brand and voice.  This person will also support internal staff facing communications and development department communications.  The individual will ensure effective messaging and communication strategies and strengthen/build new systems for a growing organization.

Responsibilities include:

  1. Develop and execute tactical marketing communications strategy for the organization including effective targeting, messaging and positioning, with a keen focus on patient retention and growth
  2. Establish a strategic operating plan, budget, and timelines for marketing and communications activities, as well as metrics for measuring success
  3. Develop & share communications policy that: outlines key channels & audiences; orients staff to effective communications strategies and tools, and formalizes content and style guidelines for the organization
  4. Own and maintain a written/design/social media style guides and policies to ensure use in all printed, digital and external communications efforts and serve as final approver for collateral (signs, brochures, etc.)
  5. Work with community engagement, development, HR, operations & clinical on patient, partner, internal, recruitment, and fundraising communications
  6. Oversee development and manages content of the organization website and social media outlets to ensure that the website design and content enhances the overall image of the organization
  7. Manage digital advertising strategy including Google Ad Grant; identify and leverage local advertising opportunities
  8. Guide staff in use of social media channels; provide training to ensure high standards are consistently met
  9. Create content, e.g., memes, graphics, etc., and/or outsource content needs to third party design vendors as necessary, work with teams to produce e-newsletters focused on key constituents, e.g., donors, community partners, etc. and develop/oversee creation of original web content in consultation with relevant staff 
  10. Lead all media engagement activities, including fielding and redirecting media requests, drafting media advisories and press releases, securing quotes from staff and members, reporter interview scheduling and speaker prep, media outreach and follow-up
  11. Support CEO, CMO, and other leaders as needed for speechwriting, interview prep and other communications projects as needed
  12. Supervise work of consultants, vendors and contractors as needed
  13. Special projects as assigned


  • Minimum of 5 years of strategic communications experience, ideally including 2 years of management experience in a diverse multi-racial, multi-gender, multi-ethnic workplace environment
  • Organized and detail-oriented with excellent project management skills
  • Strong storytelling skills, with the ability to craft clear and engaging narratives for multiple audiences
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly, effectively, and powerfully in writing and orally around the intersections of issues directly relevant to HHC’s patients and staff
  • Bilingual or multilingual proficiency preferred.
  • Experience working with communities of color, immigrant communities, and/or people whose first or only language is other than English is highly desirable.
  • Experience creating and distributing email campaigns
  • Familiarity with Wordpress, with the ability to make minor website code adjustments, as needed
  • Strong graphic design skills, with the ability to create compelling digital and/or print designs using the Adobe Creative Suite (especially InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator) 
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment
  • Ability to adapt to shifting priorities
  • Self-motivated individual who also excels in a collaborative setting
