Fermilab is seeking a Social Media Manager for its popular social media channels. Nearly one million people follow us across a variety of platforms. As a member of the Office of Communication, you will handle Fermilab’s social media communications and campaigns to highlight research in particle physics and related fields and advance the laboratory’s reputation. You will drive our social media strategy, run daily social media content,  supervise conversations monitor comments and track metrics.

The right candidate will have experience in both big-picture planning and the hands-on execution of content and communications in social media, ideally for a scientific organization. The person will have the ability to connect with Fermilab’s voice and branding, curate existing content and help build content from start to finish. You will have excellent verbal and written communications skills, ideally with experience in public relations.

You Will:

  • Define, lead, and implement Fermilab’s social media vision to drive brand awareness and public engagement
  • Handle Fermilab social-media channels on various platforms (including YouTube, Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, etc.) and post compelling and relevant content
  • Acquire and maintain a deep understanding of the worldwide particle physics community and its followers on social media
  • Build the social media editorial calendar and complete all social media posts, including news, achievements and events, sometimes live streaming
  • Work both individually and with team members to develop content for social media channels, campaigns, and communications efforts.
  • Track metrics and supervise monitor online conversations comments related to Fermilab
  • Develop and implement social media strategy and tactics for social growth in support of the overall communication strategy of the laboratory
  • Maintain institutional social media policies
  • Provide expertise and mentorship for social media standard processes and trends both within the Office of Communication and across the lab, and advise on emerging opportunities
  • When internal or external issues arise, advise on social channel strategy, and coordinate messaging adaptation for platforms
  • Serve as key point of contact and coordination for Fermilab social media, working in concert with the entire Office of Communication as well as key collaborators, both internal and external to Fermilab, including laboratory management and employees
  • Coordinate with all collaborators to meet campaign requirements and deadlines
  • Have opportunities to write news or feature articles about research at Fermilab
  • Produce content at home, in studio, and on location.

We Are Looking For:

  • Bachelor's degree required; journalism, communications, or new media degree preferred
  • At least 4 years of dedicated social media experience
  • Outstanding copywriting, editing and grammatical skills
  • Ability to create and build quality content for the science-interested public from concept to delivery
  • Ability to prioritize tasks, meet deadlines, and work in a fast- paced environment.
  • Ability to translate sophisticated technical concepts into language easily comprehensible to non-specialists
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively with all levels of staff in a team-based environment, and to fulfill urgent requests in a timely and professional manner
  • Ability to analyze and report on social media performance metrics
  • Expertise on many social media platforms, including YouTube, Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn
  • Understanding of the current social media landscape, trends, and standard processes
  • Comfort serving as social media guide in training and educating others within the organization
  • Experience with content strategy and social media campaigns
  • Experience using social media scheduling, monitoring, and engagement tools (e.g., Sprout Social)
  • Experience with graphic design and tools, including photo-editing software
  • Experience crafting creating short videos for social media
  • You are self-motivated and self-directed

Applicable Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Preferred:

  • Experience working in a research or scientific environment
  • Experience running institutional social media channels
  • Experience with video editing software such as Premiere or After Effects
  • Experience writing news and feature articles, and for the web
