We are looking for a Communications Director to devise communications and public relations strategies for the organization across all channels: earned media, paid media, social media strategy, print design, website maintenance and e-newsletter production.

Working closely with the policy, outreach and executive directors, the communications director’s primary responsibilities are to:
• Identify opportunities to promote the Advance Illinois brand and continue grow the organization’s role as a thought leader in education
• Develop, implement and evaluate marketing and communications strategies across all platforms
• Supervise the Senior Communications Manager and Graphics Intern
• Coordinate and collaborate with both internal and external colleagues to promote Advance Illinois initiatives and priorities
Specific responsibilities include:
• Oversee content and audience development across AI online platforms including:
      -Advance Illinois website
      -Facebook URL
      -Real Learning for Real Life
      -Facebook URL
      -Funding Illinois’ Future
      -Facebook URL
• Manage weekly e-newsletter development and distribution
• Create workplans for Advance-led coalitions
• Collaborate with external colleagues, both local and national
• Determine appropriate collateral material to support legislative outreach
• Pitch stories and provide background for reporters covering education issues
• Draft presentations, testimony, op-eds, letters to the editor, media alerts, one-pagers and press releases
• Assist in fundraising efforts particularly around the communications-led Real Learning for Real Life campaign
• Monitor online metrics and analyze results on audience demographic trends, preferred content and to identify opportunities for targeted engagement
• Devise and implement a digital strategy for reaching parts of the state without education coverage
• Work with the growing community outreach and development departments to meet increasing communications requirements
• Support marketing, public relations and media relations efforts related to AI’s special events

Bachelors degree
Strategic thinker with excellent writing skills
5-7 years of progressive responsibility in communications, public relations, advocacy or related experience
Coalition management experience
Multitasker able to prioritize requests from multiple stakeholders
Experience determining and analyzing metrics to evaluate and improve communications strategies
Knowledge of social media, marketing and email best practices
Proficiency in Office Word and Powerpoint
Experience with WordPress and MailChimp a plus
Enthusiasm for emerging technologies as tools for social change

Strongly preferred:
Masters degree
Public affairs experience
Knowledge of education reform or other experience in education
Existing relationships with IL media
Nonprofit experience
